Biometric documents
1- The biometric passport
The validity of the biometric passport is 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors under 19.
The biometric passport is an individual document. As a result, minors must hold an individual passport and can no longer have their names and photos added to their parents’ passports.
Personal appearance is required for photograph taking and fingerprint data collection.
Personal presence is required for biometric passport submission and for pickup. Kids exempted from electronically scanned fingerprints at application submission day, do not need to be present for pick-up.
Biometric passports are issued in Algeria. This procedure requires a minimum period of 6 weeks between the facial and fingerprint recognition operation and passport reception.
2- The Emergency biometric passport
The Algerian Emergency Passport is an official and legal travel document that proves the identity and the nationality of its holder. It is governed by the provisions of Executive Decree No. 16-58 of February 3, 2016, which sets the conditions for the issuance and delivery of the emergency passport. This specifically concerns the following cases of Algerian citizens:
- Residents abroad that are registered with a diplomatic or consular post, who do not possess a biometric passport, and who, for family, professional, administrative, or health reasons, are required to urgently travel outside their country of residence;
- Residents abroad that are registered with a diplomatic or consular post, who are temporarily staying in a country other than their country of residence, whose passport has been lost, damaged, or stolen;
- Nationals that are not registered with a diplomatic or consular post, whose application for the regularization of their administrative status has been accepted by the host country authorities, which require a valid passport upon submission of their residency plan.
3- National Identity Card
Requirements:
- Valid consular registration card.
- Application form available at the Embassy.
- Three (3) similar recent passport-sized photographs.
- Expired National Identity Card.
- No fee is required.
