Algeria joins The Hague Convention on the Abolition of the Requirement of Legalization for foreign public documents

The Embassy of Algeria in The Hague is honored to inform members of the national community residing in the Netherlands that the President of the Republic has signed Presidential Decree No. 25-217, dated August 4, 2025, concerning the accession of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents, signed in The Hague on October 5, 1961. This decree was published in Official Journal No. 55, dated August 17, 2025.

This step fulfills one of the commitments made by the Secretary of State in charge of the National Community Abroad, Mr. Sofiane Chaïb, during his meeting with citizens residing in the Netherlands in The Hague in April 2025, in accordance with the high instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Algeria’s accession to this Convention aims to facilitate administrative procedures for its citizens residing abroad by eliminating the traditional procedure of document legalization and replacing it with the issuance of a single certification called an “Apostille” by the competent national authority.
